Traits and Actions

Immutable Form

Trait
This golem is immune to any spell or effect that would alter its form.

Magic Resistance

Trait
The golem has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Absorb Heat

Trait
Whenever the golem takes fire damage, it gains temporary hit points equal to the damage taken (no save).

Pressure Release

Trait
When the golem takes slashing damage, it releases a jet of scalding steam. Each creature within 10 feet must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. The golem can't use this trait again until it takes fire damage.

Boiling Over

Trait
At the start of each of its turns, the golem's internal pressure builds. If it has taken fire damage since its last turn, it gains 5 temporary hit points and its next attack deals an extra 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Standing Leap

Trait
The golem's long jump is up to 25 feet and its high jump is up to 15 feet, with or without a running start.

Multiattack

Action
The golem makes three Slam attacks.

Slam

Action
Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d8+8) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Steam Blast

Action
The golem vents a 30-foot cone of superheated steam. Each creature in that area must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, taking 45 (10d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. The golem can't use this action again until it takes fire damage.

Scalding Soup

Action
The golem hurls a glob of boiling broth at a point within 60 feet. Each creature in a 10-foot-radius sphere must make a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (5d8) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. The area becomes difficult terrain until the end of the golem's next turn.

Pressure Cook

Bonus Action
The golem seals its lid, granting itself resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage until the start of its next turn.

Steam Vent

Reaction
When the golem takes fire damage, it can release a 15-foot burst of steam centered on itself. Each other creature in that area must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success.

Combat Behavior

Tactics

• Uses Steam Blast and Scalding Soup to soften foes, then closes to melee.
• Absorbs fire attacks to fuel Pressure Release and Steam Blast.
• Targets spellcasters who use fire, ignoring others if possible.

Combat Style

Relentless, methodical, and uses area denial to control the battlefield.

Morale

Fights until destroyed; no fear, no retreat.

Monster Description

This golem appears as a massive, anthropomorphic iron cauldron, its body a single, seamless pot with a lid fused to its shoulders. Its surface is pitted and scorched, and a perpetual, low rumble emanates from within. Steam hisses from seams and rivets, and a faint, savory smell—like simmering broth—wafts from its form. The golem stands 12 feet tall and weighs nearly three tons. Its arms are thick, pipe-like limbs ending in heavy, ladle-shaped hands. Its face is a simple, riveted mask with two glowing, amber eye-slits, set into the pot's side. When it moves, it thuds with heavy, deliberate steps, and its internal contents slosh audibly. Occasionally, it belches a cloud of scalding steam, and its surface temperature visibly rises when it absorbs fire. The golem's movements are slow but inexorable, and it can leap short distances with surprising power. Its lid can be opened (by a creature with a DC 22 Strength check) to reveal a churning, boiling broth inside, but doing so risks the golem's Pressure Release trait. The golem is otherwise silent, communicating only through steam, heat, and the rhythmic clanking of its body. It glows faintly from within, casting a dim, orange light in a 10-foot radius. When damaged, it leaks hot liquid and steam, and its eye-slits flare brighter.

Monster behavior

The Simmering Pot Golem is a mindless guardian, animated solely to protect its assigned location—typically a kitchen, larder, or treasure vault. It responds to any creature that enters its territory without permission, attacking with relentless, mechanical fury. It shows no fear, no hesitation, and no desire for negotiation. It prioritizes targets that use fire, as it seeks to absorb their flames to fuel its own attacks. It will ignore non-threatening creatures if they remain still and do not approach its ward, but any hostile action triggers its full arsenal. The golem does not pursue fleeing enemies beyond its designated area, returning to its post once the threat is gone. It is immune to intimidation and bribery, and it cannot be reasoned with. When idle, it stands motionless, occasionally venting steam. It does not sleep, eat, or tire, and it will guard its post until destroyed. If its lid is opened, it becomes agitated, venting steam and attempting to slam the lid shut. It cannot be tamed or controlled, but it can be commanded by its creator or by a creature wielding its control amulet.

Ecology

As a construct, the Simmering Pot Golem does not eat, breathe, or reproduce. It is created through a complex ritual involving a master smith, a wizard, and the sacrifice of a fire elemental's essence. The golem's internal fire is its heart, and it draws sustenance from absorbed flames, which it converts into steam and pressure. It is typically found in ancient dwarven forges, grand wizards' towers, or wealthy merchants' vaults, where it serves as an ultimate guardian. It has no natural predators, but it can be damaged by cold-based attacks, which cool its internal fires. It is vulnerable to being dismantled by skilled artificers, but such attempts require immense effort. The golem's creation is rare and expensive, requiring rare metals and a significant expenditure of magical power. It is often paired with other constructs, such as animated armor or shield guardians, to form a layered defense. Its presence is a sign of great wealth or powerful magic, and it is often the final obstacle before a treasure hoard.

History

The first Simmering Pot Golem was created by the dwarven smith-king Borin Ironhand, who sought an unbreakable guardian for his royal kitchens after a rival clan poisoned his entire court. He worked with the archmage Fandral Stonecall to bind a fire elemental into an enchanted cauldron, and the golem was born. It proved so effective that the secret of its creation spread, and several powerful factions commissioned their own versions. Over the centuries, many of these golems have been lost or forgotten, and they occasionally resurface in ancient ruins or dungeons. Adventurers might encounter one guarding a legendary chef's recipe book, a dragon's hoard, or the entrance to a lost dwarven brewery. Some tales speak of a golem that has absorbed so much fire over the ages that it has become sentient, developing a crude desire to cook perfect meals. Such a golem might be bargained with, offering its culinary skills in exchange for freedom. The golem is a testament to the dwarves' mastery of fire and metal, and it remains a feared and respected guardian.
