Combat Behavior

Tactics

• Silverback uses his Lightning Breath to soften clustered enemies, then follows with a Cold Breath.
• He prefers to fight from the air, using his Wing Attack to scatter ground forces and create space.
• He targets spellcasters and ranged attackers first, using his mobility and reach to close on them.

Combat Style

He uses hit-and-run tactics, diving from high altitude to strike with claws, then climbing back to safety. He uses his breath weapons to control the battlefield and break formations.

Morale

Silverback fights to protect his territory and allies, but he is not reckless. He retreats if he is below half hit points and no allies are in immediate danger, using his flight to escape and recover.

Monster Description

Silverback, the Mountain Thane, is a gargantuan silver dragon whose scales shimmer like polished platinum under the pale mountain sun, each one edged with frost that never melts. His wings, spanning over a hundred feet, are webbed with crystalline membranes that refract light into faint rainbows, and his eyes glow with the soft blue of a glacier's heart. His back is ridged with a mane of silver spines that grow longer and thicker with age, giving him his name. When he moves, the ground trembles; his claws, each as long as a greatsword, leave furrows in solid stone. Despite his immense size, he moves with a serpentine grace, his tail flowing behind him like a river of mercury. He smells of high-altitude air, ozone, and cold stone, and his breath plumes in the thin mountain air. His roar is a thunderous peal that echoes for miles, carrying a note of ancient authority. When he speaks, his voice is deep and resonant, like the rumble of an avalanche, yet surprisingly gentle. He is often seen coiled around a peak, watching the valleys below with a patience that spans centuries. His scales are not merely metallic; they are dense as shields, and his horns curve like twin crescents, adorned with small icicles that tinkle softly when he turns his head.

Monster behavior

Silverback is a guardian and a watcher, not a hunter. He spends his days patrolling his mountain domain, checking on the herds of mountain goats, the nests of rocs, and the small communities that cling to the lower slopes. He is deeply curious about mortals, often observing them from a distance, learning their languages and customs. When approached peacefully, he is a patient and philosophical conversationalist, offering wisdom and aid to those who prove worthy. He abhors cruelty and greed, and will intervene to protect the innocent, but he prefers diplomacy to violence. If threatened, he first issues a warning roar, then a display of his breath weapon, and only attacks if the threat persists. He is fiercely territorial against evil dragons and giants, and will drive them off with overwhelming force. He has a particular hatred for those who despoil natural beauty, and he has been known to melt entire mining camps with his breath if they pollute a sacred mountain spring.

Ecology

Silverback dwells in a vast cave system beneath the highest peak of the Greyspine Mountains, a labyrinth of ice-carved halls and crystal-lined chambers. He sustains himself on the pure mountain air and the mineral-rich snow, though he occasionally consumes the flesh of beasts he has slain in defense of his territory. He is a keystone species in his environment; his presence keeps the local giant and dragon populations in check, and his droppings fertilize the thin alpine soil, supporting hardy plants. He is ancient, having lived for over two thousand years, and his life cycle is tied to the mountain itself; he sheds his scales like leaves, and each one becomes a smooth, silver stone that the local folk collect as lucky charms. He has a symbiotic relationship with a flock of giant eagles, who nest in his cave and warn him of intruders in exchange for protection.

History

Silverback was hatched during the Age of Embers, a time of great volcanic activity, and he has witnessed the rise and fall of three mountain kingdoms. He earned his name and his title after single-handedly driving a horde of frost giants from the Greyspine range, a battle that lasted seven days and carved the valley known as the Giant's Grave. The local dwarves, who owe their survival to him, carved a massive effigy of his face into the cliffside, which still stands today. In recent years, Silverback has become aware of a growing darkness in the Underdark beneath his mountain, a cult of drow who seek to awaken a primordial evil. He has begun to seek out heroes among the mortals of the surface, testing them with trials of courage and wisdom, hoping to forge allies before the coming conflict. He is also searching for a lost artifact, the Heart of the Mountain, which he believes can be used to seal the dark gate the drow are opening.
